how we work

The Process

Here at KML Designs, we believe that what separates a house from home is in a space's ability to resonate with your lifestyle and needs. We take a hands on approach to help guide you through the design process so you don't feel overwhelmed. Knowing what to expect from your Design Team and knowing what is expected from you makes the experience more enjoyable and gratifying. Below you can view the steps involved, keeping in mind that every client and project is unique and we may adjust accordingly to your specific needs.

Phase One | Discovery

The first part of the design process is meet the client and their home to discuss the scope of work, user needs/wants, budget, and timeline. We learn about you and your family, your pets, how you live in your home and what you don’t like. We will spend about an hour going over your project. After our initial meeting we will put together a service agreement outlining the scope of work. Once you approve and contracts are signed, the interior design phase begins.

Next, we give you some homework. We ask that you put a small vision board together of images from Pinterest or online and write comments about things that you like or dislike about the images. We will also share inspirational images and comments so that we can transform your vision into reality.

Many times, homes don’t have floor plans, or the floor plans are old and hand drafted. Either way, we may use your existing floor plans, or create new plans from the ground up by field measuring all the spaces of your home. We sketch a new plan with the dimensions; then we draft the sketches on computer software and create a set of new digital floor plans.

Phase Two | Design

This is the phase where we solve your space planning issues for you. We want to make sure that the spaces are functional. We create working drawings, plan set, elevations, and sketches to help facilitate the design intent. Finish, Furniture, and Equipment selections are developed during this phase so that they are properly incorporated. We will prepare an estimated budget and timeline.

Once the design concepts are developed, we schedule a presentation with the client for review and feedback. The idea is to get the space planning right! We provide room layouts and material boards samples with a new color palette that flows with the new materials which include fabrics, wall coverings, textiles, color selection, cabinetry, millwork, lighting, art, and accessories.

Phase Three | Draft
Phase Three | Draft

After the design selections and layouts are approved with move into the final draft of plans where we can send the drawings out to bid to the proper subcontractors like carpenters, tile setters, plumbers, electricians, etc. We take pride in the construction drawings that we create ourselves to execute our own designs. Here at KML Design we have cultivated relationships with some of the best contractors in the Vegas area and act as the liaison between the Client and various trades.

Phase Four | Purchasing

This phase is where we review all of the comparable estimates from the contractors to get approval to move forward with the necessary work. We will prepare estimates, invoices, and purchase orders for materials, finishes, lighting, furniture, and accessories. KML will track orders from all vendors and manage the merchandise delivered to our preferred white glove receiving company.

If shop drawings are required from the different trades on particular design elements, we will review the technical drawings and approve or modify as needed.

Phase Five | Installation

The final stages of the design process is installation of materials, finishes, furniture, and accessories. The designers at KML Designs will do progressive site visits to ensure design intent is actualized. We will coordinate white glove delivery, on-site supervision of installation, create punch lists of items that need to be addressed, and do a post occupancy evaluation to ensure complete satisfaction of our client.
